Next Man Up?

It’s not breaking news Tom Brady is out of commission for a few more weeks, but now so is Garoppolo. I was going to continue doing weekly game updates but this is a little more important. Jimmy began Sunday’s home opener against Miami as hot as ever (and I’m not just talking about looks.) First Patriots possession of the game resulted in a 12 yard Garoppolo-to-Amendola connection for a touchdown. Just over four minutes later, Jimmy G found Martellus Bennett for a 20 yard touchdown pass. This was perfect because about 10 minutes before the start of this game I read an article listing all the reasons why Bennett should be traded… Because he only had one reception in week one… Riiiiiiight. Anyway, for TD number three, it was back to Amendola for 10 yards. He went 18-27 on the day with 234 yards but after all of that it was bad news bears. A little over four minutes left to go in the half and Jimmy gets crushed by Dolphin’s linebacker Kiko Alonso, landing hard on his throwing shoulder.

The result: a sprained AC joint. Adam Schefter reported this morning that the Pats still aren’t counting him out for Thursday’s color rush game against Houston, but “it’s a long shot.” With the short week, and Jimmy being day to day, who’s going to prepare at quarterback?

Without further ado, meet Jacoby Brissett. Drafted 91st overall this past April out of North Carolina State University. The Pats’ third string QB had some pretty impressive college numbers, most impressive being throwing 187 passes without an interception during his junior season (2014.) Although he didn’t throw much Sunday, Brissett still went 6-9 with 92 yards and one fumble. Obviously he was nervous. Why wouldn’t he be? If he’s the starter Thursday night, expect the nerves to be there. He should be alright though because the chances Gronk returns are pretty high. On top of that, Edelman, Hogan, Amendola, Mitchell, and Blount are at his disposal. The only issue is who will be his backup. If Jimmy is healthy enough to potentially play, he could be listed as the backup, but if that’s out of the question Belichick and McDaniels need to figure it out and soon.

Headed into Thursday, both teams are 2-0. Houston hasn’t really impressed me much, but we all remember what happened the last time New England faced Brock Osweiler. However, he appeared on the Texans injury report with a back issue, although he fully participated in practice today. He may not be 100% going into this game which is something this defense will keep in mind. 14 other Texans were on the injury report this morning including J.J. Watt, Brian Cushing, and Jadeveon Clowney, all people who will be head hunting for Brissett. Over the next few days I’m sure we’ll be getting injury updates from both sides, so that’s definitely something to look out for.

Thursday should be interesting. Although the Patriots are reaching far into the depth chart for the most important position on the field, I’m not exactly worried that it’ll be a bad game. We’ll see what the rookie can do. And like always, #FreeBrady and #FireGoodell.
